U.S.- Help Stop Icelandic Whaling
- by: Animal Advocates
- recipient: President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke
Iceland continues to ignore the commercial whaling moratorium by the International Whaling Commission, and continues to kill endangered whales.
In 2010, the Icelandic whaling company Havlur exported over 800 tons of endangered whale meat. In 2009 and 2010, 273 endangered fin whales were killed in Iceland, despite that the International Whaling Commission scientists state that the death of more than 46 fin whales per year is unsustainable.
We urge the United States government to employ economic sanctions, under what is called the Pelly Amendment and help end whaling in Iceland.
