As many of you already know my son’s lunch was ripped from his hands by a staff member at Dowagiac Union High School. and thrown in the trash because of a negative lunch balance of $4.95. He offered to pay that days meal and bring the remaining balance in the following day, but was told no. Something needs to be done! My son has not even received an apology from the school and we are basically being told it was out of our own negligence that this happened due to the fact I forgot to send a check to put in his account.
I want guidelines set in place for all of the Dowagiac Schools. No child should be denied food EVER. Under no circumstances. If there is a case where the child owes more than $10.00 then he needs to be offered a cold sandwich at the very least. I say $10.oo because there are circumstances that may prevent the parents from sending a check that week. Each school needs to set aside funding for sandwiches to be handed out for the special cases that may arise. This would include cases where parents are not able to pay that week, or the School may have made a mistake and charged a free lunch students account giving him a negative balance, preventing him from having a hot lunch. This would ensure the student would at least eat something until the problem is straightened out.
Second NO BULLYING ALLOWED by staff members. Taking food from a child’s hand and throwing it away should NOT be tolerated! Posting lists with student’s names and account balances for all to see also needs to come to a stop!
Finally the schools officials need to do their part and make sure the letters they say are being sent, are actually in fact sent!
Tell Dowagiac school officials not to let any students go hungry!

Update #110 years ago
Update, Dowagiac superintendant met with staff and the "incident" as they called it, was discussed. The staff member acted within guidlines and no diciplinary action will be taken.
