It's just like Big Tobacco.
New York State is investigating Exxon for lying to the public about climate change. Remember when Big Tobacco knew its products caused cancer but lied to us? That's what Exxon did - it has known for decades that its oil causes harmful climate change, but funds climate denial efforts anyway.
If Exxon wants to make this up to the public and take one step - out of hundreds - to change its environmental legacy, it needs to stop funding ALEC now.
ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, is a shadowy right-wing legislation factory funded by corporations like Koch Industries, State Farm, and, oh hey Big Tobacco again, PhillipMorris. Thousands of state legislators (almost all Republicans) are also members of ALEC. The corporations' lobbyists write "model bills" that the lawmakers take home and try to pass. Many of these bills attack our shared global climate by attacking clean energy laws, encouraging fracking, and requiring that public schools teach climate denial. Deadly Stand Your Ground gun laws and attacks on voting rights have also come from ALEC.
The group even protects animal abusers through cruel "ag-gag" legislation that makes it harder to film and stop industrial animal cruelty.
Exxon is a member of ALEC, which means they're STILL funding climate denial. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and even Shell have quit ALEC in the past year - it's time for Exxon to do the same. Sign the petition to Exxon's CEO today!
