In the latest example of absurd climate change denial, North Carolina is proposing a law that would forbid city planners from making accurate projections of sea level changes.
Lawmakers want legislation forcing any official estimates of sea level rise to be based only on historical data using a linear projection that takes no account whatsoever of recent developments.
Apart from being awful science, this plan is reckless. Planning would be based on completely inaccurate projections, resulting in dangerous coastal developments based on where lawmakers want the sea to be in 50 years rather than where it will be.
Acting as though a problem doesn’t exist doesn’t make it go away. As nice as it would be for climate change not to be happening, this is not the case and states have to be prepared. Tell NC to not even consider such a silly proposal.
We the undersigned ask that you do not consider passing or proposing a law requiring estimates of sea level rise, necessary for coastal development plans, to use inaccurate projections based only on a linear use of historical data, not recent developments.
Physical developments are not a theological or political debate class - they have to be based on real science and not somebody's opinion. Forcing coastal construction to be based on completely inaccurate projections is dangerous.
Thank you for your attention.
