PETITION
As you may have seen on the local news, heard on the radio or read in the newspaper, on Monday, 19 January, 2009, while my wife and I were at work, our beloved Labrador Retriever "Jazz", the sweetest, most gentle, most loving pet any human will ever have, was murdered by two (2) "pit bulls"D who somehow entered our fenced yard, chased her through a dog door into our house and killed her in her own room. She died a painful death of terror in a room where she should have been safe.
In spite of the fact that these animals were reported to have bitten one neighbor previously, had shown aggressive behavior to numerous others, and had been picked up by Nags Head Police Dept. on another occasion, the Dare County SPCA released the animals to their owners, for payment of $25.00, the next day. Only after pleading our case to anyone who would listen, (county commissioners, town councilmen, Police and the SPCA), did authorities take appropriate action to reacquire these animals.
We are thankful that the dogs are in custody. However, we feel strongly that there will be no "Justice for Jazz" until those animals are destroyed. Based on the ferocity of this attack, the history of the animals, and the fact that the owners have proven to be irresponsible, the law should require that these animals be destroyed. That is the first plea of this petition, that the dogs be destroyed. The second plea is that the laws and ordinances with regard to dangerous dogs, (which have not been updated in thirty (30) years), be revisited, rewritten, enacted and enforced , that will protect the innocent and punish the guilty.
If you agree, please sign this petition in memory of our beloved Jazz, and help us send a message to our elected officials at the local, county and state levels that we want action, NOW, to address the growing problem of irresponsible dog ownership. Also, please call or write your Dare County Commissioners, County Attorney, the SPCA, your local councilmen and police departments, even your state legislators to let them know how you feel. Together, maybe we can prevent this from happening to anyone else.
Thank-you,
