After a recent visit to Denmark, Sweden and Norway I was struck by how clean the roads and parks are. There were no plastic drinks bottles or cans to be seen anywhere.
The reason is clear, there are substantial deposits paid on such containers at the points of sale and therefore people take their containers back to shops. Those that do not care about the money and still throw away their empty bottles and cans are soon cleared up after by poorer people supplementing their income.
Similar schemes operate in Germany too.
A further benefit is that local authorities would have to deal with lower volumes of recyclable plastic and aluminium cans, thereby making refuse collection cheaper.
In summary the benefits are: less litter, cheaper refuse collection and disposal costs, an income for poorer members of society.
