The Pangolins are not the most familiar animal in the world but at the same time are an important asset to the environment. Similar to the armadillo species of animal, the Pangolin can also roll up into a ball of armor as a form of defense. The big problem is that there are several species of this animal, many of which are not protected under the Endangered Species Act. The Pangolins with their unique method of protection makes them easy to “snatch” in their ball shape. It is believed that Pangolins are “the new rhinos,” with illegal trade now raging across Asia and Africa, while also being a status symbol for dinner in China and Vietnam. Their scales are also used in various forms for medicinal purposes. It is estimated that poachers have killed and marketed more than 182,000 pangolins since 2011. Without immediate protection, these animals will become extinct in no time.
Several species of pangolins remain unprotected in Asia and several others in Africa. The trade of killing, poaching and marketing pangolins is already an illegal trade and without full protection, these animals can be in grave danger. Attempts to protect the pangolin species in the ESA have been generated but still in limbo. Our efforts in this petition is to encourage the USFWS to be more diligent in listing the seven endangered species of Pangolin under the EPSA. You can help us in our efforts by signing and sharing this petition and save the Pangolin from ultimate danger and extinction.
