The mountains of Galicia, in the north of Spain, are being destroyed by fire once again. One more year we are witnessing the destruction of thousands of hectares of forests, provoking incalculable losses in terms of ecology, biodiversity and landscape value. And the worst is that most of these fires are started by people: mad men acting alone or people driven by economic interests of all kinds.
The Galician government regrets the situation and has declared a state of emergency, but as usual, they hadn’t taken any long term measures to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.
Feeling sad is not enough: we must take drastic measures to prevent Galicia from burning every year. First, it’s necessary to adopt a strategic management plan that enhances the sustainable and diversified economic development of the forests. Second, it’s necessary to hire permanent and well prepared squads that are ready all year to fight the wildfires, and are not only hired when fires occur. And finally, to coordinate all authorities to prosecute and condemn more harshly the criminals who cause the wildfires.
Together we can stop the destruction of the Galician forests. Join me and sign this petition to make the politicians react. With your help, we will put an end to a sad story repeated every year.
