Save the Palisades Peace-Mobile
CITY THREATENS TO TOW PALISADES PEACE-MOBILE
Kaplan-Allens to Host Rally/Concert to Save the VW Microbus
Sunday, October 3 at 4 p.m.
5738 Sherier Place, NW
One of the neighborhood's newest and most-loved public art displays--a colorful, whimsical, engine-less VW microbus stationed in our front yard since May--is slated for removal by the art-less, humor-less DC Department of Public Works. On September 16, DPW declared the VW "dangerous" and "abandoned," and threatened to remove it on Halloween and fine us up to $1000.
Maybe you have seen the Peace-Mobile as you drive down Sherier Place, or if you attended our 25th anniversary celebration in the front yard last month, when the Sherier Mountain Boys played for an audience of more than 100. We've hosted community events in our yard for nearly 25 years--an annual marshmallow roast, summer arts series, movie screenings, dance classes and touch football games.
In that same spirit, we brought the Peace-Mobile to our yard when it ended its run as a set piece for the GDS theatrical production of "Pippin" last spring. Its peace signs, rainbows and hearts are meant to entertain and remind us of a more idealistic time, when we all wanted to "spread a little sunshine." All summer, passersby stopped to take photos with their cell phones and celebrate in that spirit. But one neighbor complained to DPW, and now the agency threatens to censor and shut down our display.
We love the Palisades and our neighbors and we love that our yard is seen as a popular gathering place for all ages. Most of all, we love the First Amendment, which supports our right to display art on our private property.
So, with the support of neighbors, friends, classmates at GDS and art lovers everywhere, we invite you to a 1960s-themed "Rally to Save the Peace-Mobile" on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. Musicians, actors and artists from the neighborhood and GDS will be on hand. We hope to raise awareness about the value of art and free expression, and to raise funds to support public art through the Palisades Community Fund. We%u2019ll also invite you to sign a petition asking DPW to rescind its order.
Feel free to dress in 1960s garb, bring friends and family. Let the sun shine in! Questions about this effort should be directed to: Michael Allen (mallen@relmanlaw.com), Janice Kaplan (janicelkaplan@aol.com), Halle Kaplan-Allen (hkaplan-allen11@gds.org) and Hudson Kaplan-Allen (hkaplan-allen13@gds.org). Our home phone is 202/966-8411.
We, the undersigned, petition the DC Department of Public Works, the D.C. Council and the Mayor to rescind the order to remove the Palisades Peace-Mobile. It is a beloved public art display that adds to the culture and sense of community in the Palisades neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
