The Story of My Life
The story of my life
Only a minute, you will see
It starts before you came
And ends when you see me
I was born out on the ice floes
Off the coast of Newfoundland
Only knew my mother''s love
As I had yet to see a man
Snuggled safely with my mom
My coat starting to turn gray
Didn't know my fate to come
Monsters came at break of day
Just barely two weeks old
I'm crying and alone
They feel no compassion
These men with hearts of stone
Well, I may not be human
But I'm a baby just the same
If you know and you say nothing
Are you as much to blame?
The story of my life
Just took a minute, you can see
It starts before you came
And ends when you kill me...
Canada's annual seal hunt is the largest marine mammal slaughter on Earth.
Over 96% of the seals killed are under 3 months old. They may be killed as soon as they start to moult their white fur at 12-15 days old.
Seals are born on the ice. This year virtually no sea ice has formed in key seal birthing areas. The lack of ice will results in the death of many young seals.
Despite the environmental hardships the seals are facing, the Canadian government raised the quota to 330,000 seals.
The European Union's ban on Canadian seal products has greatly reduced the profitability associated with the hunt. The response of the Canadian Government has been to fight the ban and to search for new markets for seal products.
Over 650,000 messages have been sent to the Canadian Government asking for the commercial seal hunt to be banned. The response of the Canadian Government was to serve seal meat in Parliament.
Mac Harb, one Canadian senator is listening. Mac Harb rose in the Senate Chamber to introduce Bill S-207 to end the commercial seal hunt. The Bill was formally introduced, but the majority of Senators decided not to allow debate.
As Canadians, we must take action now and tell our Government that we call for an immediate end to the commercial seal hunt in Canada. We call for an end for many reasons, but foremost that it is inherently inhumane and we refuse to support this cruelty in our country.
We the undersigned;
having reviewed the input of parties both supporting and protesting the hunt and having examined our beliefs; are calling for an immediate end to the commercial seal hunt in Canada.
We call for an end to the commercial seal hunt on the grounds that it is inherently inhumane. We have seen the evidence that death is not always immediate; evidence which reveals the suffering inflicted on the young seals. Over 96% of the seals killed are under 3 months old. Seals who are already facing hardships due to the environmental conditions.
We call for an end to the commercial seal hunt so that Canadian children may be spared the emotional distress of discovering their country allows the slaughter of helpless baby seals.
We call for an end to the commercial sea hunt because the slaughter is damaging Canada's reputation worldwide.
We call for an end to the commercial seal hunt because it is responsible for numerous boycotts of Canadian products worldwide.
We call for an end to the commercial seal hunt because we believe tax dollars should be used for preservation rather than destruction.
