Japan announced that this year (2015) they would resume their whaling program. Their whaling process, which they have named "scientific whaling", involves the process of slaughtering whales for "research purposes" while yet they sell the meat in Japan for commercial purposes. The International Whaling Commission voted last year that their program is illegal and should be stopped. Japan refuses to abide by the rules set in place.
There are many scientific studies done to whales every year that doesn't involve killing any of these peaceful, endangered creatures. Japan is slaughtering them for their meat value and renaming it in the name of "science". If they are not stopped, many whale species like the Blue whale (10,000 remaining), the Humpback whale (30,000 remaining), and the Fin whale (30,000 remaining) will be gone in the next 10-20 years.
