Clean Up The Pacific Trash Vortex
We are two concerned junior environmentalists who have witnessed and recently become more aware of the impact of direct pollution of water bodies especially by developed countries. This pollution is a major cause in a decrease in biodiversity of aquatic organisms such as endangered sea turtles, seabirds such as the albatross and pelican, and other aquatic mammals. One of the most polluted places on earth is the middle of the pacific ocean, where winds and tides have caused a trash buildup somewhere between the size of Texas and twice that of the United States. It is hard to tell how big the area exactly is, since much of the pollution exists underwater, but we do know that it poses a huge threat to aquatic life.
Our petition strives to get the attention of international authorities that have the ability to create a cleanup and prevention program that can work towards slowing the growth of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and cleaning up existing trash. An organization like this would be tremendously expensive, which is why we need federal funding from multiple nations- this issue exists in international waters, making it an international problem. Fixing it should become a priority to countries throughout the world, because it means saving marine life, preserving aquatic habitats, and maintaining biodiversity. Maintaining biodiversity and the health of the organisms will benefit us in return because we consume fish and other sea animals that consume pollutants containing harmful chemicals and plastic particles.
