For over a century, hunting has been banned in Massachusetts' Blue Hills Reservation. The park, located just 10 miles south of downtown Boston, has become a safe haven for deer escaping hunters and hikers escaping the stress of city life. But all that is about to change. The Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has just approved four days of hunting in the reservation to thin out the deer population.
Dear Governor Baker,
As you know, the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) have approved a deer hunting season that will begin November 30th. Up to 800 of the Blue Hills Reservation deer could be killed.
I believe that hunting deer is a cruel, unsustainable solution to overpopulation concerns, especially when other, viable options are available (such as contraception). And, with the incredulous decision to keep the Reservation open to hikers during the hunt, the hunt could easily spin out of control - with the blood of both deer and men, women, and children on your hands.
I respectfully urge you to stop the hunt and maintain the ban that has been in place for over 100 years. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
