We Indians demand the introduction and implementation of more stringent laws for Animal Abuse!

Albert Einstein once stated "the world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it". As people who believe in animal welfare, the time has come for us to ensure there is adequate protection for animals -- to end their status as property and to see them being treated as sentient beings who are aware of sensations and emotions, of feeling pain and suffering, and of experiencing a state of well being.

Recently, the punishment for animal abuse in India was raised from a meager 50 rupees to a 100. A crime against animals, like any other crime against human beings, needs harsh penalties.

Unfortunately, there are no stringent laws in India, and even if they do exist they are not being implemented. Consequently, the animals in India are being repeatedly abused, tortured and killed as the perpetrators have no fear of receiving a punishment that befits their crime. Wherever you look you see people getting away with just a slap on the wrist after having abused or killed an innocent animal. This is so very wrong. It also encourages more crimes against the animals, who have no voice or the power to battle against these atrocities.

Elephants are undergoing torture in the name of religion, and stray dogs are being culled in Kerala. In other parts of India dogs are being run over and killed, acid is being thrown on cattle and puppies are being flung down from heights and burned alive. These are just a few examples and they need to be stopped along with the number of other forms of abuse that are being enacted with absolutely no fear of impunity.

We animal lovers want to see justice being done for the crimes already perpetrated and to prevent further crimes against our animals. The time has come for action and we need to do what is within our power to make this world a kinder place for our animals before it becomes too late.

Dear Mr Modi,

I write to you cause I truly believe you are a kind and good soul, who wishes to see this world become a better place for all. I have heard great things about you and I hope that you will seriously consider my appeal.

The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men. However, in India cruelty against these poor innocent harmless animals is on the rise and it continues unabated.

Stray animals are driven over and killed everyday all over the country. Elephants are tortured in the name of culture and tradition in Kerala, bulls are abused for Jallikattu, monkeys and bears are ill treated for entertainment. There are even cases of individuals working alone and in groups torturing and killing animals for their amusement.

All this happens because Indians have no fear of being penalised. as we have no effective laws in our country. Anyone can abuse and kill an animal and get away with a miniscule fine - and that is if he is caught.

Is this ethical, Mr Modi? How can we wish to progress morally as a nation, if we continue to allow people to murder animals and not punish them for their actions so that these acts are not repeated. Shouldn't a punishment befit the crime? Do animals lives not matter at all in India?

We worship the cow and at the same time we abuse her and treat her like a commodity. India is one of the biggest leather and beef exporters in the world. Is this our way of worshipping this beautiful, kind animal, Mr Modi? All they ever do their whole lives is to give and give and give. In return we rape them, steal their milk and babies and slaughter them when they are of no use to us anymore. This is such a shame.

One of the doctrines of Hinduism is Ahimsa. Yet everywhere you look animals are harmed and no one cares. Culture, tradition and religion come above compassion. No God has ever told us Indias to abuse and kill animals to please him. Yet we continue to practise this wantonly with no fear of punishment.

I plead you with you, Mr Modi, to please introduce stringent laws against animal abuse, that are both effective and timely. It is a heartfelt request to you. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. I hope that you will consider my request and do what is required to show your compassion. These animals have done us no wrong.

With the hope to see a kinder, more caring world.

Kind regards and thanks
