I, the undersigned, would like to protest against the implementation of no-dog policy in Zhejiang province. After the implementation of new no-dog policy in northern china’s Zhejiang province, the authorities organized the dog hunt. The purpose of this brutal dog hunt was to keep the village clean and safe for visitors. They have slaughtered more than 86 dogs so far. The new rules were introduced on September 22nd and the mass dog killing was done on October 12th.
A notice posted in the village said: No pet dogs are allowed, if any of your pets including ducks, rabbit, cows, sheep, chickens etc. are seen wandering around the village, they will be killed. There was a reward of 50 Yuan for the dog owner if they get rid of their dogs before October 1st.
Chen Baochang, secretary of the village, explained that the purpose of implementing this new rule was cleanliness of village and visitor’s safety. He further explained that 75% of the villagers supported the no dog policy. Chen said that this ancient village has become more and more popular for tourists. The village welcomes more than 100 tourists per day during the weekdays and even more during the weekend. The no dog rule is implemented to ensure the safety of tourists.
Some people sent their pets to live with relatives because this was the only way to say their pets.
The Chinese online community is strongly against this dog cull. A user commented on Weibo, “Those who eat dogs should die”. Dog eating controversies in China are not new. According to an undercover investigation more than 10,000 dogs were brought to the city of Yulin this year for dog meat eating festival.
I request you to take serious action against this brutal killing of dogs. The local residents are also not in favor of this oppressive rule.
