STOP LAUSD RETALIATION AGAINST STRIKING UTLA MEMBERS!

STOP LAUSD RETALIATION AGAINST STRIKING UTLA MEMBERS!

The District is retaliating against three different groups of UTLA Members because and only because we went on Strike:

1. Reduced Workload Leave Teachers

2. Health & Human Services Professionals

3. Substitute Teachers

4. WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY TO HELP

1. Reduced Workload Leave Teachers (RWL)

In May 2019, the district admiited they rescinded the RWL status of teachers because and only because they went on Strike.

This directly impacts the retirement benefits of these educators for the rest of their lives — resulting in an average reduction of roughly $250 per month in retirement — shrinking their retirement benefits by roughly $3,000 per year — for the rest of their lives.

A loss of $3,000 per year for the rest of their lives because and only because they went on Strike.

LAUSD informed these educators of its decision exactly one week before the district began its week-long celebration of, "Teacher Appreciation Week."

These educators will be retiring within the next couple of years, and this district retaliation will decimate their retirement income for the rest of their lives.

Due to the district's action, teachers 51+ have lost the opportunity to apply for a RWL until five years from now.

2. Health & Human Services Professionals (HHS)

After the Strike, members — including Psychologists, Occupational and Physical Therapists, Adaptive PE Teachers, Speech and Language Pathologists, Psychiatric Social Workers and Pupil Services and Attendance Counselors with IEPs, and others, were informed that they must make up missed student time because and only because they went on Strike.

The district decreed that these "missed" services must be made up without additional compensation.

The district expects dedicated HHS professionals to perform work for free — for missed days members were on Strike for which the district already declared that members would not be paid.

UTLA demanded to bargain the issue, and, several meetings later, the district has not reversed its decision to retaliate against members because and only because they went on Strike.

3. Substitute Teachers

After the Strike, the district admitted it cut pay for all Striking Substitute Teachers who otherwise qualified for the long-term rate, irrespective of whether their assignments had ended.

A mid-career regular classroom teacher lost roughly $2,500 salary as the result of honoring the picket line.

In addition to that sacrifice, after the Strike, Substitute Teachers in long-term teaching assignments have been penalized roughly an additional $2,000 as the result of LAUSD canceling their long-term assignments because and only because they went on Strike.

UTLA has filed on Unfair Labor Practice charge with PERB.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY TO HELP

Please write to LAUSD School Board Members and demand that they reverse this district retalation against RWL teachers, Health and Human Services professionals, and Substitute Teachers.

Please tell them that no UTLA member should be retaliated against for exercising their legal right to Strike, and that the District should honor its commitment to the spirit of its "No Retaliation" Strike Clause.

Please tell the School Board that retaliating against Striking RWL teachers, HHS professioanls, and Substitute Teachers is wholly unacceptable, unconscionable, and intolerable — and it must be reversed immediately.

Please tell them that restoring the pay and work requirements of these educators would be one small step towards repairing the public trust this district leadership has sorely damaged.
