One year ago, Simon Newman was elected to take over Thomas Powell's position as President of Mount St. Mary's University. Though it was sad to see Powell retire, it was exciting to have a new face, perspective, and plan leading the Mount to success.
Unfortunately, the recent events that have occurred at the Mount have been disheartening. While President Newman has been working diligently to improve the school and increase enrollment, many people involved here at the Mount have made the decision to distort his efforts in a very negative connotation.
Mount St. Mary's University needs Simon Newman. He is an intelligent businessman with only the Mount's best interest at heart. He has given a number of speeches and presentations to keep transparency between administration and student body, and for that he should be admired. As a student, he has exceeded my expectations as a president.
As a student, it upsets me that faculty cannot embrace the much needed change.
As a student, it makes me extremely uncomfortable that faculty preaches to their classes about the "wrong" firing of someone who slandered the institution.
As a student, it discourages me that the faculty claims to have this Catholic attitude that I have not seen all year.
As a student, I find sorrow and grief for the underclassmen that have to go through this without the facts.
Most importantly, as a student, about to graduate, it deeply saddens me that a group of people can accumulate so much hatred toward one human being trying to do good.
This human being has a stronger "Catholic Identity" than the entire group combined. This human being has lead more people and more corporations than any of the group combined. This human being has a plan to only improve the school. Currently, the majority of the faculty is in violation of fiduciary duty. I do not feel cared for anymore in this institution. This should not be the case, ever. I am very disturbed that the faculty cannot accept a change in position and recognize that with a change in power, comes a change in many other areas as well. Why would he have someone work for him who opposes his views?
This petition is against the faculty to reclaim Simon Newman's position as President of Mount St. Mary's University. The Mount needs President Newman. I hope and pray that everyone else can see this too.
