Do Not Kill the Exotic Animals but Waive Penalties Until They Can Be Properly Homed

With the passing of a law against owning and caring for exotic animals in Mount Vernon, Washington, authorities have been cracking down on an owner of several wild animals. The disturbing fact is that the option is to euthanize the animals as a means to rid them from his property immediately.

A ban from ownership of exotic animals is beneficial for the safety of the owner and the community but extremely inhumane to consider killing the animals as a way to rid them from the area. Up to this point, the animals’ owner, Dave Colburn has housed wolves, cougars and foxes for nearly 14 years at Predators of the Heart in Anacortes. He has used the animals as a form of education, taking them to schools, libraries, churches and fairs to educate people about exotic wildlife. Colburn states, "They're not hurting anybody, they haven't hurt anybody. “

If he can't find homes for them, Colburn said he will likely have to kill the two dozen animals the organization has rescued or raised on his 10-acres of land. We are attempting to urge the County Commissioner to waive the penalties until such time as proper homes can be found for the animals. You can help to save these animals by signing and sharing this petition.

Skagit County Commissioner Lisa Janicki – The laws and regulations regarding keeping exotic animals is in their best interest but choosing to euthanize them is an inhumane method of resolving this issue. Steps need to be taken to place the animals in appropriate homes like zoos and sanctuaries. We are asking that you waive the penalties for this Mr. Colburn until such time as proper homes can be found for the animals.
