Another environmentalist who was defending the forests of Peru from illegal miners has been murdered, according to a report on Mongabay.com
Alfredo Ernesto Vracko Neuenschwander was a woodworker who helped to lead a campaign against illegal gold miners in the Tambopata region of Peru. It is alleged he was shot at his home in November by those associated with illegal mining interests - he was just 58 years-old.
Vracko had received many threats against his life over the years, however, the threats are alleged to have increased after he formed an association for woodworkers who wanted to protect the forests from illegal mining.
It is further alleged he received little help from authorities in Peru.
Many environmentalists and indigenous leaders from Peru have been killed trying to save the environment. The report stated: "According to a report published a year ago by Global Witness, at least 57 activists were killed between 2002 and 2014."
Alfredo Ernesto Vracko Neuenschwander's death should not be in vain - nor should any of the other individuals who have been fighting to save the forests!
Will you join me in urging the Government of Peru to move to protect environmentalists by investigating threats and providing protection to individuals who have received death threats?
