I’m writing to express my concern about the County Personnel Board’s plan to end its agreement with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) and to replace GBHS with an in-house staff of animal control and impoundment staff. I am grateful for your continued support on this matter.
Based on the statistics and projections I have seen, the County could never provide services in any way comparable to what the GBHS provides for less than what the GBHS is paid. And with the County still in bankruptcy, spending more money for services already provided at a lower cost is financially irresponsible.
From a humane standpoint, there is no way the County can offer the same kind of care and compassion for the animals than the GBHS can. Their veterinary program with Auburn University vet students provides a level of medical care that is not only better for the animals – it helps deter the spread of infectious diseases.
As you are well aware and visibly supportive of, GBHS has presented a stunning performance record for the 9 months it has handled animal control for the county. The partnership between GBHS and the County has been incredible and it needs to be continued. More animals have been spayed, neutered, medically treated and adopted than ever before in the county.
The GBHS deserves our praise and support…not a pink slip!
Please take whatever action is necessary to ensure that our Personnel Board does not make another fiscally embarrassing decision – one that costs our citizens and our County needless expenses and brings suffering and death to thousands of innocent animals.
I am counting on your support on Sept. 8 as we #SayYEStoDay8. THANK YOU in advance.
Sincerely,
