Many people in the area are not even aware that poaching is against the law and continue to do so, leaving these poor animals to die. They continue to attack the beautiful, majestic African elephants and continue to saw off their tusks. They then leave the animals in the brush to rot. Often contaminated food is left out for the elephants to feed on, poisoning them so that the tusks can be removed. This is disgusting and infuriating!!
More than 100 African elephants are killed every day and in 2011 alone, almost 12 per cent of the population was destroyed. But despite the fact that Kenya's elephant population has plummeted from around 167,000 to 35,000 in less than four decades, prosecution rates for wildlife crimes are shockingly low.
It appears that about 2,000 people annually are arrested for some type of poaching crime but only about 10 percent of that number are convicted and less than that are punished!! Seven percent of those caught with ivory and tusks found themselves behind bars. Even though the conviction rate for these crimes is high, very few go to prison.
Those involved in the actual poaching are rarely arrested. Perhaps if they knew they could end up in prison, it might deter them. This is the hope of the Kenya government. They need to implement stricter laws against poaching and enforce harsher laws. Maybe if offenders faced longer prison times and fines, poaching would stop or lessen. Animals like the elephant are vital for the country and the environment. Kenya Government – You need to consider and implement new laws that are stricter regarding poaching of animals like the elephants in your country. This is appalling and the African elephant will soon become extinct if this practice continues. It is infuriating that you allow these animals to be killed just for their tusks. If you bumped up the laws and enforced them with much harsher punishments for all involved in the act of poaching, maybe you can save the animals like the elephants, so important in your country!!
