For the past three decades, the United Kennel Club has sponsored weight-pulling dog competitions.
These dogs are trained as puppies to pull a heavy chain around their neck for "conditioning." Once this is accomplished, they hook them up to a tire for a long period of time. Then the dogs are fitted with a special pulling harness to pull concrete blocks sixteen feet. Handlers call this a working dog.
Costa Rica just banned this practice, and the U.S. should follow their lead immediately.
This causes overbreeding and what happens to the old dogs or puppies that will not pull 5,000 pounds of concrete blocks?? They end up at animal control. Maybe the definition of a "Working" dog should be redefined. A working dog would be: herding cattle, retrieving game or assisting the handicap. There are hundreds of these clubs.
