Liberate Our Great White Sharks

100 million great white sharks are killed a year by humans, roughly 11000 sharks every hour!
Let's stand together and fight for the ones who do not have speech to speak up and fight for themselves.

It is proven that with the extinction of sharks, the ocean's reefs will undoubtedly become dominated with algae, which means, the once beautiful coral-filled reefs will be a distant memory. At the top of the tropic level, apex preditors, like the great white exist. Although numerically scarce, apex predators are considered to be the cap on the entire ecosystem.

Even though some parts of the world have taken action against this, humans are by far the only predators of the great white shark, slaughtering them for their jaws, teeth and fins, used for delicacies and trophies!
The problem is that no accurate population numbers are known but the Great White Shark is now considered an endangered species.  The Great White Shark is a rare wild animal that adds to the richness, diversity, myth and mystery of our world.
The novel, Jaws, by Peter Benchley and the film by Steven Spielberg portrayed the Great White as a ferocious, mindless killing machine! But that image is completely erroneous. Considering the fact the conservationist Jimmy Hall, actually swam beside the magnificent animal without any cage protection and touched it repeatedly while filming it.
The great white shark resides more fearsome in our imagination than in reality. Like most exceptional hunters, they are very curious when they encounter something unusual in their territories, thus lacking any limbs, the only way to explore the object is to bite it, and these bites are called exploratory bites. It appears most humans are to bony for their liking. Most fatalities occur through loss of blood from initial bite rather then major organ loss or complete body consumption. There are also cases of mistaken identity, of sharks thinking humans, usually surfers, are seals due to the shape of our bodies when looking up from below. It is proved that many attacks occur in waters with low visibility or other factors which impair the shark's senses. (For example, approximately more than 38 people die annually from lightning strikes, while less than 1 person per year is killed by a shark.)

However their numbers are drastically decreasing, and they have been  listed as an endangered species.

One reason for this is that sharks, only reproduce once a year, having a gestation period of eleven months and only reaching sexual maturity around fifteen years of age. If allowed they can have a life span of over thirty years! Sharks are amazingly fascinating creatures. On average they reach a length of ten to fifteen feet, can reach speeds of forty miles per hour and can at times launch themselves more than ten feet into the air!  The great white is equipped with two of the most powerful sensing mechanisms in Nature: a highly developed sense of "smell"- Sharks can be described as a swimming nose. Every creature in the briny blue generates a small electrical field from where their skin meets the water, sharks have the ability to sense these electrical fields which radiate from living creatures.

And if no action is taken, the once beautiful, mysterious and misunderstood animal will be history.

Every organism has the right to live, a right to an undisturbed and fairly judged life.

come on, let's Save the Great White Sharks!

Dear Government body
We the undersigned, are asking for your assistance in helping to save the Great White Shark from extinction.

The Great White Shark is a rare wild animal that adds to the richness, diversity, myth and mystery of our world. Though they are now listed as an endangered species. What makes it more profound is that their numbers are not known.

I know it is very difficult to cease this inhumane action of murdering these misunderstood animals but it can be drastically reduced. "As of April, 2007, great white sharks were fully protected within 370 kilometres (200 nmi) of New Zealand and additionally from fishing by New Zealand-flagged boats outside this range. The maximum penalty is a $250,000 fine and up to six months in prison."

If more effective laws could be introduced, we could save the health and balance of our oceans as well as protect and save these intriguing organisms from extinction and thus preserve the mysterious and fascinating entity, in order to show the future generations how wonderfully diverse our planet is. Sharks are a pure example of the world's mysterious beauty, beauty and complexity that is very difficult for us to comprehend and therefore alot of us unfairly judge these animals. By speaking out we might be able to make a difference and save them.

Please help save our oceans. With your participation we can make a difference.

Thank you for attention and the time taken in reading this petition. It is greatly appreciated
