Tell Cuban Lawmakers to Legalize Same-Sex Civil Unions
A draft bill that seeks to modify the Cuban Family Code to legalize same-sex civil unions will be discussed in the legislative assembly in 2012. According to Mariela Castro, director of the National Sex Education Centre and daughter of President Raul Castro, the draft bill is an opportunity to "explicitly define a policy that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity."
In a country where lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people were once sent to re-education camps to stamp out their "counter-revolutionary" behaviors, a series of gay rights reforms have been enacted in the last five years. Same-sex civil unions could be the next step to move the country closer to promoting justice and equality for LGBT people.
Act now to call on Cuban lawmakers to pass the draft bill that would legalize same-sex civil unions.
We the undersigned call on you to pass the draft bill that would modify the Cuban Family Code to legalize same-sex civil unions. In a country where lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people were once sent to re-education camps, this bill is an opportunity to explicitly define a policy that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. We urge you to take the next step to move Cuba closer to promoting justice and equality for all LGBT people by legalizing same-sex civil unions.
