Stop the Piñon Ridge Uranium Mill
We, by our signatures, petition Governor John Hickenlooper and the State of Colorado to revoke the radioactive materials license and all state permits to build and operate the Piñon Ridge Uranium Mill. We believe that this mill will imperil the scenic and agricultural nature of the Paradox Valley, will disturb the environment of the Western Slope, and will negatively impact the tourism-based economy of Southwestern Colorado.
The Piñon Ridge Mill will have serious negative impacts on air and water quality, will create radioactive waste tailings and a permanent storage problem, and will increase the transportation of hazardous materials on state highways. We believe that the State's required bonding for the facility is inadequate to protect human health and provide a safe clean-up when the mill closes in the future. Although we support the need for economic development in the Paradox Valley, we do not believe that the mill's negative environmental and socio-economic impacts can be overcome by the short-term gains of a few dozen jobs that will result in a long-term stigma on our region.
