A human health crisis is brewing on our nation's farms. An estimated 70 percent of antibiotics used in the United States are fed to animals that are not sick, breeding antibiotic-resistant bacteria and causing costly, painful, and sometimes deadly human diseases.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for protecting public health but has failed time and time again to address this problem, often bowing to pressure from the factory farming industry. Enough is enough. We cannot jeopardize the effectiveness of our antibiotics any longer.
We need your help to stop this practice! Ask FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to ban the use of antibiotics with healthy animals.
We the undersigned are very concerned about the antibiotics given to farm animals. You have acknowledged that continuous antibiotic use with healthy animals caused the development of resistant bacteria. To protect public health, we urge the FDA to immediately ban the non-therapeutic use of medically important antibiotics with healthy farm animals.
