On October 3, 2007 Yar Mading (picture) and her sister Ajak were violently abducted from their family home in Jonglei State, Southern Sudan by gunmen from the Murle tribe. Abductions of this kind are a recurrent problem yet the local government has made no effort to find or free these abducted girls saying that they lack the police force and communications equipment to coordinate a rescue. Visit www.save-yar.org for up-to-date info.
Higher levels of government need to address this issue by encouraging and facilitating negotiations with the Murle for the peaceful and immediate release of Yar, Ajak, and any other children that have been abducted.

We the undersigned request that the Government of Southern Sudan take immediate action to convince the Jonglei State Government that it can no longer turn a blind eye to the child abductions taking place in Bor County.
We write you in response to the violent abduction of Yar and Ajak Mading
from their family home in Jonglei state on October 3, 2007. The abductors
were gunmen from the Murle tribe. A report by the UN Secretary General in August 2007 held the Murle responsible for 40 child abductions in the past year.
The local government has taken no action to find or free these abducted
girls, saying they lack the police force and communications equipment to
coordinate a rescue. We urge the Government of Southern Sudan Mission to the United States to push for negotiations with the Murle tribe for the
peaceful, voluntary and immediate release of Yar, Ajak, and any other children that have been abducted.
We thank you for accepting this petition, which we sign to reiterate the
urgency of this matter and to express our solidarity with the families
suffering from these rampant abductions.
