So often we hear stories about otherwise healthy animals who need surgery to mend broken bones among other ailments.
The costs for vet bills is astronomical. Most pet guardians can just barely cover the costs of vet bills or can't cover them at all, and, oftentimes choose to have their animal friend "put down" by a vet. What's worse is that vets are willing to kill animals whose guardians aren't able to pay for their health bills.
Two years ago I began a petition calling for animal rights and welfare to be encoded into Canada's Constitution, the issue of animal healthcare needs to be included as well.

Just recently, I received an email about a kitty who had fallen and needed very costly operations. The kitty's guardian couldn't afford the costs, but instead of asking for help, the guardian opted for the kitty's demise. Allowing animals to be put down because their health bills are expensive should no longer be an option, and it's practice needs to become illegal, starting here in Canada.
We, the undersigned, call on Canada's Premiers and the Prime Minister of Canada, to recognize that animals we share our homes with are our friends and family, and no one should be faced with the horrific decision of whether or not your animal friend lives or dies because you can't afford the cost of the medical fees. This is Canada, the land that embraces universal health-care, thanks to Tommy Douglas. Let's move into a more enlightened Canada and have pet care covered under our provincial health plans.
In the famous words of Gandhi, "The Greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
