Finishing Waverly Farm Road to Rt 15

ATTENTION Parents of Alvey Elementary and future Parents of Gravely Elementary!

The new Gravely Elementary school is almost completed and we are very excited but Wavery Farm Road still needs to be completed!  It is the intent of PW county to have Toll Brothers run the road all the way out to route 15 so that the buses and drivers going to Gravely can get to the school from that direction rather than having to pass Alvey first.  Mark Simms, The Vice President of Development for Dominion Valley stated Toll Brothers has no plans in the near future to complete the road, when pressed he said that meant for several year, to complete this road.

Why should you as a parent be concerned  about the completion of this road?

Alvey and Gravley Parents:

Ÿ        Only one road out in an Emergency!  Just last week a Linton Hall High School had to be evacuated because of a gas leak in the area.  Imagine trying to evacuate both elementary schools with one way in and one way out.

Ÿ        Imagine navigating past Alvey with cars parked on both sides, children and parents crossing, cars doing u-turns to get to parking or back out of the area.  Now imagine a fender bender on the same road, or even worse an ambulance needing to get past the traffic to a child at the school or one of the homes in the area.

Ÿ        Traffic backups from 8:30 am until 9:30am and 3:30 to 4:30pm.

Gravley Parents:

Ÿ        Add 7 more miles to your trip plus more time and waste of gas

Ÿ        Add about 30 minutes to the time  your child spends riding the bus.  Leaving even less free time at home.

Ÿ        You will have to get past any back-up at Alvey to get to school on time.

Prince William County will incur extra cost for gas, bus drivers pay and school bus maintenance  (our tax money) on top of the more than 1 million dollar expense they%u2018ve already put out in order to build the school that was Toll Brothers%u2019 responsibility in the first place according to their agreement with the county.

My son/ daughter will be attending Alvey/ Gravely Elementary in the Fall of 2008.  As you know Gravely Elementary School is set to open in September of 2008 on Waverly Farm Road in the Dominion Valley Development off of route 15 in Haymarket.  I am concerned that there is no other access to these schools except through for Waverly Farm Road.  During drop off and pick-up time this two lane road is already severely congested and has several safety issues.  People are parked on both sides of the road narrowing the drivable area, even with the cross walks you have people darting out between the parked cards to get to the other side, you have people doing u-turns to get to parking and so they do not block the road or not doing u-turns and simply causing a severe back-up.  Should there be an emergency, there is no way an emergency vehicle could get back there at this point and should it be a more dire emergency like the recent gas near Linton Hall High School there is only one road to and from the schools.  Now we are going to be adding another large number of cars that will be trying to get past the first group to get to the new school further down.  Even with the school opening time being staggered by 10 minutes, this will not be sufficient to deal with the congestion.  The only way to deal with this problem is going to be cutting a new road through to 15, Antioch or Waterfall road.

I would like you to deal with this serious safety issue.  I imagine it would be a black eye for Toll Brothers PR if it took a tragedy for them to move forward on this issue.   I also imagine that it won%u2019t help sales to have to take potential buyers through the traffic congestion.

Sincerely,
