Save Clarion O-I Glass Plant & Employees (P2)

To: Owens-Illinois Inc.

Clarion County is home to 40,000 residents and employs roughly 21,000 workers. Of those, approximately 2% are employed by the Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Clarion. As of December 2009, unemployment was 9.7%. That means with this proposed closing in July 2010, Clarion is likely to see unemployment well over 10% for some time.

Clarion is a small, close-knit community. Families and generations of people %u2013 students and senior citizens %u2013 make Clarion County their home. It is easily accessed by I-80 (which is still toll-free) and is 45 minutes from I-79, both of which make Clarion an ideal location for larger businesses or as a distribution center.

Therefore we, the citizens of the Borough of Clarion and of Clarion County and surrounding areas, petition Owens-Illinois to reassess the climactic damage that the closing of the Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Clarion will have on its dedicated workforce and community.

We request new dialogue between Owens-Illinois and the 420 employees and Clarion County%u2019s economic leaders with an open-minded view to other options to increase sales volume and to revitalizing the third-largest employer in Clarion County.

And we request that Owens-Illinois make every attempt to investigate funding for an energy-efficient factory.

It is our belief that if Owens-Illinois would be more aware of the economy throughout the regions and do whatever it takes to guarantee continued work, their profit margins would be also guaranteed and the overall health of Owens-Illinois would thus be improved.

Finally, it is the hope of the community and surrounding towns within Clarion County that Owens-Illinois will hear our requests and the pleas of not only those employed but of all concerned regarding the impact the closing will have for the Clarion community.

And it is our hope that we will hear from Owens-Illinois regarding our petition within thirty days of its receipt. Thank you for your consideration. We wait to hear from you.
